Arriving off the bus at 1900 we had a 5 second walk to the hostel 🙂 and joined the queue of thousands to check into our hostel Dingos who also run the Fraser island tours. When you arrive it’s too late to eat at the hostel bar so make sure you have your own food with you or eat before hand. They do have a happy hour from 1900-2100 though so you can drink all you like! We had a couple of bottles of wine (not too bad for $15) and then Abbie bumped into some good friends of hers that she met in New Zealand so went and caught up with them. Danielle and I (and apparently everyone else in our room) had an early night.
Every morning the hostel serves free (X2 each) pancakes at 0700 so if you can be bothered to get up they’re pretty nice.The beach is only a 5 min walk to the hostel so we spent most of the day there, luckily we had our sun shelter that we bought in Noosa as there is no shade on the beach and we needed to hide from the ozzy sun!
In the afternoon we went to our fraser tour briefing to get some theory on driving in the sand and meet the other people in the car (8 in each group). We had an all girls car; 6 brits, a dutchy and an American.
So next morning the adventure started! (after a lot of hanging round and some more theory). We were pointed toward our cars and then took off on convey to drive to fraser:). Danielle was the first driver and did a superb job of getting us across safely. The car in front got stuck in the sand pretty much straight away and had to dig themselves out. That day we took it in turns to drive around the island, visiting various attractions. Our favourite was lake mckenzie which is crystal clear water and perfect white sand (like most of the island). This was a perfect place for a swim ; no sharks , crocodiles or salty water.
On the second day we drove to champagne pools and Indian Head. From Indian Head we spotted sharks and stingrays. Champagne pools are as you can imagine really bubbly rock pools as the sea water splashes over again and again building up froth.
That night we made our dinner and then enjoyed a goon or two!!
On the last day we visited a washed up shipwreck and a lazy river where we had fun in little rubber rings :).
We absolutely loved this tour and would definitely recommend. We were really lucky with our car as well, everyone got on and had a good laugh being thrown around in the back. The food is all included in the tour and they give you plenty so contrary to what everyone tells you, don’t bring snacks, definitely won’t need them.
On the last day we got back to the hostel around 1500 so had a few hours before our 14 hr overnight bus to airlie beach. Before we left we all had a car family dinner in a restaurant near the hostel, it was kind of pricey but well worth it the food was amazing!
